The Challenge

Blanch House, Brighton’s original boutique hotel, is a Grade II listed Regency Town House Hotel, situated in a Georgian terrace just off the seafront in Brighton’s Kemp Town. Blanch House is currently rated number 1 of hotels in Brighton and in 2016 was awarded “Travellers Choice” status by TripAdvisor when it was voted as one of the top 25 hotels in the UK for Romance.

In 2015 it won the bronze award for the Best Small Hotel in the South East of England in conjunction with Tourism South East. It is regularly featured in both the press and travel media and in 2015 was voted as one of the Top 100 Hotels in the UK by The Sunday Times.

A reliable and fast internet connection is one of the most important requirements of a modern day hotel. Whilst larger hotel chains can install sophisticated a dedicated internet products, the small and medium hotels are often looking at costly upfront payments for equipment and are unable to match the monthly costs of faster broadband products.

Blanch House were utilising a standard (copper) broadband product that was not sufficient for their guest or of the quality associated with the hotel itself.

The Solution

Once Opeanreach rolled out fibre broadband to the area, OptaNet and Hotel Owner Jeremy Ornellas met to discuss the requirements and provide recommendations on the best network design. Utilising their experience in the events industry, OptaNet were able to provide a solution that would flood the building with a WiFi signal, to be used by guests and staff/management.

OptaNet provided their Superfast Fibre 80 Plus product and then installed a number of Cisco wireless access points (APs) throughout the hotel. Each access point connected to a single PoE switch in the office meaning they could be powered with the Ethernet cable without the need for a power source nearby. All cabling was provided by OptaNet and in keeping with the existing building decoration.

Finally, OptaNet provided a high end Cisco Meraki WiFi router that sat between the internet service and the PoE switch. This product enables the hotel to monitor guest device activity in the bar area and create branded splash pages if they wish.

We couldn’t be happier with the level of knowledge and service from OptaNet. We now have a reliable internet connection separated for our employees and our guests. OptaNet went above and beyond and we highly recommend them to any other hotel looking to improve their internet offering.
