OptaNet have completed works on a new cinema located in the historic town of Lewes. Initially, the contract was to deliver a dedicated Ethernet leased line, but with the ability to deliver multiple aspects of the overall development project, OptaNet were asked to design and deliver additional tasks, such as network design, IP surveillance, building-wide Wi-Fi and cloud-hosted telephony.
The flexibility and knowledge of the OptaNet team made sure all services were delivered within exceptionally tight deadlines. Frequent sites visits were required to liaise with multiple third parties and stakeholders.
The result is a fully networked and secure building, that allows for monitoring of cameras and internet performance from inside the building, and remotely via any internet enabled device, anywhere in the world.
About the cinema
The 760-square metre site was owned by Harvey’s Brewery before being snapped up in 2013 by the Lewes Community Screen group. The development took four years and £8 million to bring to life, before opening to the general public in May 2017. The Depot features state of the art technology in their three-screen cinema, as well as a cafe, restaurant and educational facilities.
The opening ceremony was attended by Sherlock and Hobbit actor Martin Freeman and Mark Rylance, who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2016. We managed the process from order to installation. This included working with Openreach on blocked ducts, road closures and traffic management. The result is a reliable and dedicated 50Mbps Ethernet leased line.
Taking over from the cable contractor, we installed the patch panel, performed testing and labelled all the Cat5 cables rolled up in the comms room. We then patched these into our Cisco PoE 48 port switch.
The original plans identified only four external locations for cameras. We retro-fitted a camera solution, requested at a later date, that existing cabling did not allow for. 12 cameras now monitor the building both inside and out.
Our experienced WiFi personnel designed the Wi-Fi solution, along with channel planning. Cisco Meraki access points were installed and allow for enhanced user management and remote monitoring.
We were responsible for deploying the core network to the building, including VLAN and firewall configuration and intermediate switches and devices.
Cloud Hosted VoIP
Our cloud hosted VoIP solution was installed throughout the building, including the box office, front desk, bars and office areas. A further cordless tech phone was provided allowing its owner to move easily throughout the building.
