How Symmetric FTTP from OptaNet delivers more than just speed
Symmetric FTTP (sFTTP) from OptaNet ensures dependable performance, proactive support, and enhanced service levels – all essential for businesses that can’t afford downtime or sluggish upload performance.
For businesses across the UK, a reliable internet connection is no longer a luxury – it’s a necessity. As more organisations adopt cloud-based services, unified communications, and large data transfers, the limitations of traditional broadband services become increasingly evident. While Openreach’s FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) has delivered significant improvements over legacy copper solutions, a new generation of business-grade connectivity is setting a higher benchmark: Symmetric FTTP, or sFTTP.
At OptaNet, we’re proud to offer sFTTP services powered by a range of leading Altnets, including CityFibre, FullFibre, and ITS. In this article, we’ll explore how sFTTP compares to standard FTTP provided by Openreach and why it’s becoming the preferred choice for modern UK businesses.
What is FTTP?
FTTP stands for Fibre to the Premises. It involves a full fibre optic connection running directly from the local exchange to the business premises, bypassing the copper infrastructure used in older technologies like FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet). This results in significantly faster and more reliable internet access.
Openreach, a division of BT Group, is the largest provider of FTTP infrastructure in the UK. Many ISPs use their network to deliver broadband services to homes and businesses.
The Limitation of Openreach FTTP
While Openreach FTTP is a major step forward from copper-based broadband, it has one key limitation for business use: asymmetry. In most cases, download speeds can reach up to 1Gbps, but upload speeds are typically restricted to 115 Mbps or 220 Mbps depending on the package. For general web browsing or video streaming, this may be sufficient. But for businesses that regularly upload large files, run VPNs, host services, or rely on video conferencing and VoIP, limited upload speeds can be a bottleneck.
